If you don't like the weather in Alberta, wait five minutes - it will change

Layers is the key to comfortable travel in Alberta

A popular saying in Calgary is "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes!"

Because Calgary is located in the eastern foothills of the Canadian Rockies, the weather can be unpredictable. Calgarians have learned to dress in layers, ready for any type of weather Mother Nature presents us. Below are the average temperatures throughout the year, but the warm Chinoook winds can always bring a sudden rise in temperature.

Be prepared with clothing for the hot summer sun and warm breezes, but be sure to carry layers of sweaters and jackets with you as nights can really cool down, especially in the mountains. A typical July day can reach highs of up to 30 degrees C (86 F) and dip down to below 10 degrees C (50 F) at night (it will be slightly cooler in the mountains). The days in Southern Alberta are long; in July the sun rises at around 5:30 am and sets close to 10 pm.

July can bring rain, lots of sun or whatever the wind brings our way. The best bet is to be prepared for almost anything!

Average July Temperature: High - 22.9 C; Low - 9.4 C
Average July Precipitation: Rainfall - 67.9 mm

The elevation in the Calgary area is about 3,500-4,000 feet (about 1,000-1,200 metres) above sea level so you are closer to the sun than in many parts of the world. Historical temperatures for the area can be found listed under the "Useful Links" below. Calgary's climate is semi-arid - humidity is almost always never a factor.

°C to °F Convertor

If you are traveling to Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan on the post-tour temperatures on average will be warmer without as much variation between night and day (see Regina temperatures below).

Packing List Essentials:

Sweater/Cardigan/Jumper
Rainproof and Windproof Jacket/Umbrella
Comfortable walking shoes (for tours)
Hat - Alberta is the sunniest province in Canada
Suncreen (or purchase on arrival)

Any special footwear requirements if you are making farm visits will be posted here closer to the Forum dates. Check back before departure.

All other items may be what you are comfortable wearing to each event. You will have lots of opportunity for formal dress at the galas and banquets if you wish.

In Alberta business suits and "business casual" mingle with typical western dress on a daily basis.
Western Casual is the daytime norm for agricultural meetings in Alberta (jeans/trousers or skirt with pressed shirt, jacket optional). Western Formal consists of pressed, dark jeans/trousers or skirt, dress shirt/blouse and suit jacket (tie optional). As part of the Forum tour takes place during the Calgary Stampede, you will notice an abundance of western wear as the entire city and most of Southern Alberta gets into the Stampede spirit. There will be some great shopping opportunities for boots, hats, jeans, belts and jewelry, etc. if you are interested.
