World Angus Forum 2009 Speaker Information
Presentation themes for the opening technical session of the World Angus Forum will be focused on scientific advancements in and opportunities to improve beef cattle.
Three speakers will share their insights from different perspectives and offer food for thought on Tuesday, July 14, and Doug Fee the Chief Executive of the host Canadian Angus Association will provide an overview of significant happenings around the world in different Angus associations or societies.
Chelsea Carruthers, a graduate student from the University of Saskatchewan will lead off the technical speakers with a report on genetic research that she completed utilizing DNA from a sampling of international embryo calves being raised in southern Alberta. The title of her presentation is “Genetic Diversity in Angus Cattle.” CLICK HERE for further information.
Our second speaker will be Dr. Jerry Taylor who holds the chair in animal genomics at the University of Missouri. Jerry has assembled DNA samples and phenotypes on over 18,000 beef animals, primarily Angus. Jerry will be speaking on “Prospects for Genome-Wide Selection in Beef Cattle.” CLICK HERE for further information.
The final and keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert (Bob) Church who is widely respected around the world. Dr. Church is Professor Emeritus of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Calgary. He is also a past president of the Calgary Stampede, a member of the Order of Canada, the Alberta Order of Excellence, and the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. Dr. Church will be challenging Angus breeders to recognize the potential value of the whole genome to contribute to “Healthy Animals and Healthy People.” CLICK HERE for further information.
