PROPOSED YOUTH PROGRAM *

Showcasing Canadian Youth;
Welcoming the World”

The opportunities for the 2009 World Angus Forum are endless for Angus breeders across Canada, as well as the rest of the World Angus fraternity. The chances to host, organize, and participate in an event of this magnitude only come a few times over the course of a lifetime. The 2009 World Angus Forum has the potential to be one of the largest events of its kind in Canada, not only for the Angus breed, but the purebred cattle industry as a whole. One of the greatest opportunities of the ’09 WAF exists with our youth component. It will be the first event of its kind at a World Angus Forum, or any world Angus event. The youth of the Canadian Angus Association are our future. They are extremely intelligent and capable at what they do. We believe it should be a mission of the WAF, and more specifically the WAF Youth Committee, to give Canadian Angus Youth the opportunity to fully participate in, and experience, the 2009 WAF. The main goals of the WAF Youth Committee are showcasing the abilities of our youth to guests from across the country and the world, as well as welcoming any International junior aged participants to be a part of our Youth Component. We feel that, much like the WAF as a whole, the Youth Component will give the participants a chance to network with Angus breeders and contemporaries from around the world.

The WAF Youth Program is targeted to Juniors ages 13-21 years.

Programming

The youth committee has decided on a number of programs that will be part of the WAF Youth Component. These programs are as follows:

1. Owned Female Show

The Owned Female Show will be open to all youth, although the female being shown must be registered in the name of the junior exhibitor. The show will provide the opportunity for the youth to compete in a show of their own, as well as showcase the ability of our youth to breed, prepare and show Angus cattle. In order to maximize the exposure for this event, and to avoid possible scheduling conflicts, the Youth Committee and WAF Organizational Committee have scheduled this youth show for Wednesday, July 15 before the Red Angus Open Show.

2. Problem Solving

The Problem Solving component will allow an opportunity for youth from across Canada and the World to interact, and discuss current issues in their area. The participants will be divided into groups and the program set up as a competition, where competitors work towards a solution to a problem, or as a type of round table discussion. If the idea of a problem solving competition is used, the results could be showcased to the Forum delegates. The goal of this program is to maximize networking opportunities, and give youth from different areas an idea of the issues faced by cattle breeders and agricultural producers across Canada and around the World.

3. Keynote Speaker

The Youth Committee will feature a keynote speaker(s), who will make a youth orientated presentation that will be applicable to participants from all different areas. The keynote speaker could be from the cattle industry, or they could be a motivational speaker. Either way, the speaker offers the potential for learning and development.

4. Marketing Competition

The marketing competition will offer an opportunity to showcase the creative ability of our Youth participants to the rest of the WAF delegates. The competition will involve the participants creating strategies for marketing real world ideas, and will be designed to challenge the participants. The projects created will be displayed for the rest of the delegates.

5. Judging Competition

The judging competition will be another component that showcases the abilities of the participants. Like at many current Junior Angus Shows in Canada, we would have a group of youth participants judging classes of animals giving written reasons. The top competitors would advance to the judging final, where they would judge a class of animals, giving reasons orally on the microphone. This component showcases the ability of our youth to judge cattle, and their ability to communicate their knowledge.

6. Youth Icebreakers

Icebreaker activities will be staged for the beginning of the Forum, giving the youth an opportunity to become acquainted with the other participants, and helping facilitate early interaction and networking.

7. “Youth Area”

The “Youth Area” will be a place for youth to congregate during their spare time, and will be open for the duration of the Forum. Much along the lines of an exhibitors area at many different livestock shows, this area would be for youth only, and would offer the opportunity for fellowship among the participants.
